“I Learned Not to Hold Anything Back”

Sara Wilsson

My experience with Sapphire Youth Development Center has been such a meaningful part of my growth as an artist and person. I first became involved as a student and cast member in Letters to Santa for two years. I had never been in a play before, only dance recitals, so getting the opportunity to perform in one pushed me outside of my comfort zone and gave me memories I will always cherish.

After COVID, there was a time in my life when I was very insecure and struggled to recognize the gifts I had. Ms. Robyn helped me reveal and cherish those gifts instead of being afraid to show them. She helped me find my way back to my creativity and gave me the space and opportunities to express myself again.

More recently, I’ve had the opportunity to teach classes through Sapphire. I taught students from Moore Middle School in January, and for a few weeks in June, I taught a range of students from preschoolers to middle schoolers. These experiences have helped me grow into a more confident teacher. Being trusted to work with students has taught me patience, leadership, and how to share something I love with others.

Ms. Robyn has given me so many beautiful opportunities to perform, create, teach, and grow. Thanks to her and the Sapphire Youth Development Center, I have come so far, and I will forever be grateful for the role they have played in my journey.
